West Virginia Silver Mountain Labradors has a quality breeding program specialized in breeding quality AKC registered Fox Red (dark yellow or butterscotch) Labs. Our passion for breeding Labs began nearly 30 years ago when we purchased our first Labrador for our daughter. We fell in love and that is when our adventure began. We now have puppy families all over the United States. Our goal is to breed excellent dual-purpose Labradors that make wonderful companions, hunting dogs, show dogs and therapy dogs. We, as breeders, are driven by our love for Labrador Retrievers, and we are blessed to have the opportunity to bring a little part of our WV Silver Mountain family to your family.
We are located on our family farm in beautiful Braxton County, the geographical center of West Virginia, just outside of Flatwoods off I-79. When considering buying a puppy, you need to know that Labs can live up to 15+ years, so this into consideration when deciding if you are ready for a pup. When you are ready and whether you decide to adopt a WV Silver Mountain puppy or not, make sure you get all your questions answered by the breeder.
The Fox Red Lab is a purebred Labrador. They are simply a darker shade of the traditional yellow. Fox Red Labs are recognized by all major kennel clubs around the world and are registered as yellow Labradors. The AKC states that yellow Labradors range from the dark fox-red coloring to light cream, with variations in shading. In other words, the Fox Red coat coloring of the Labrador retriever is not a new color, it's actually the darkest shade of a yellow lab. Like any other lab, they are loving, affectionate, energetic, gentle, and the perfect pet.
In the earliest years of the breed development, fox red or dark yellow was the original shade of the Labrador Retriever. But in the early 1970s, Americans decided they wanted a lighter coat on their labs and the lighter coloring became very popular. So due to lack of interest in the darker fox red shade of Labrador at that time, it had almost disappeared. But about twenty years ago, we started to see a rebirth of the original Labrador coloring. After years of breeding out the dark coat coloring from the lab, the dark red is once now in high demand.
